On 3rd August, 1918, the 2nd Essex battalion of 12 Brigade, 4th Division, moved into the front line in the right sector at Riez du Vinage, near Busnettes, a few miles to the south of Armentières. On 7th August they took part in a divisional advance and moved forward to the village of Le Cornet Malo and Picaut Wood. By now the Germans were falling back along many stretches of the line and 2nd Essex met no opposition. They did however come under some heavy shell fire throughout the day and until they were relieved on 9th August and it is likely that Charles Whebell, who died from wounds on 8th August, was a victim of this shelling. |
